The Bossman from Taguig commissioned Valleybikes to get five bikes for him and his staff. He sent me how tall are the five people who shall ride the bikes:
- 5′ 11 (me)
- 5′ 11
- 5′ 8
- 5′ 5
- 5′ 1 (female)
We exchanged ideas on what kinds of bike specifically are we looking at. I sent him pegs and the one that got the bossman’s fancy is a red steel fixie with clean lines. We got excited about the whole fixed idea plus the pros and cons about having a fixed bike. I warned him that it is not easy to ride a fixie. There is a learning curve, and it depends on the rider…
Bossman applied the Law of Fearlessness and gave the fixies a go, saying that everything can be learned, if you COMMIT.
I immediately contacted my bike sources looking for road bikes/ fixies. I fortunately bumped into a long time biker friend and dealer in one of the bike shops and talked business.
It was challenging to get a big frame for folks who are tall. There are tall frames out there, but not as common as 50s and 52s. So, I searched for other sources… luckily, the original bike pimp from U.P. (Raven) had a chromoly The Project on hand. He threw in a lugged fork to match the frame. My eyes lit up and we were good.
Chromoly vs. Aluminum
Chromoly is a type of steel which is a combination of two kinds of steel: chromium and molybdenum. This steel is usually used in bicycle frames and race car roll cages. Chromoly is stronger than normal steel, but lighter than steel. Aluminum is lighter than chromoly but more brittle as well. Aluminum is like glass, it shall break first before it bends.
The Project Boss
Fixed gear bicycles have a deep culture coming from the velodrome for track cycling. Recently made popular again due to the devil-may-care attitude of the messengers from developed cities like New York and Tokyo. Fixies have invaded Metro Manila via the underground and it is here to stay.
What makes fixies so attractive?
Must be the clean lines, the clutter of brakes and gears is not there, the simplicity of everything! The geometry is also praised and the proper use of the fork, wheelbase and cockpit.
So many options: cockpit can be bullhorn, drop, riser, mustache, super straight. So since we are delivering 5 bikes to the boss, might as well maximize the design potential. I intended Bossman to have a unique stand among the posse.
Fixed bikes are attractive to the daredevils who ride brakeless, depending on the sheer strength of their legs to stop their ride, skidding gracefully as a result.
I leave it up to you on whatever makes the fixies so beautiful…
The bikes for Taguig came at a time when the news reports are full of George Floyd’s death. Protesters fill up the streets in America despite the Covid19 virus, demanding justice for George’s death.
Black One is special because it is the only aluminum frame from the batch so it is the lightest bike among the lot. It boasts of a carbon fiber fork, plus aluminum cockpit. This bike is very clean and very sleek. If Snake Eyes (of the G.I. Joe team) had a fixed gear, this is it!
This is my personal favorite due to the cockpit and nice squishy handle grip. There is something about this cockpit which makes me feel at home. We wanted to add a front rack The Project V2 aluminum rack, but the carbon fiber fork compromised the attempt. The fork lock would be unstable so we decided not to add in the rack.
If it is a road bike, one distinct feature is to have drop bars. There are numerous positions which you can do. Hold the upper bar when slowing down and when you are in turbo mode, you gotta crouch low and hold on for dear life.
You wanna go fast? Race this!
State Bicycle Co. 4130 chromoly frame sporting the dropped bars. Don’t get caught strolling with this, you gotta be quick, if you know what I mean…
This is the shadow of The Project Boss. Chromoly frame, brakeless, with bullhorn bars. Versatile bicycle with a rich heritage.
The white balance. Here is State bicycle co’s 4130 chromoly frame with a white bullhorn bar. Perfect bike for doctors and nurses sporting the white finish of everything.
The white tires may never be immaculately clean and flawless, but you can always clean the rubber and keep it clean white.
These bicycle were given as gifts to the loyal staff of the bossman and they were very happy (according to bossman). Now, they can move from place to place with no worries from traffic.
