Valleybikes was invited by the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity’s Bike and Plant a Tree Activity last July 13. We graciously accepted and we showed up on time at the Quezon City Parks and Wildlife for the ride out. It was a fine Saturday morning, slightly overcast, but dominantly sunny. Program began with a short prayer and welcome speech at the Wildlife, explaining to the participants why we were gathered and our primary goal was elaborated.
The activity started with a prayer and a short talk by some of the fraternity’s members. The participants were briefed on the route, (plus reminders) and ground rules were stated. We had Police escorts riding motorbikes to guide the cyclists in the short but sweet bicycle ride along Quezon Avenue, CP Garcia, Katipunan, and Commonwealth avenue. We arrived at the UP Arboretum (behind the UP Ayala Technohub) and had a quick merienda of goto with egg and pancit. Pleasantries and the ride experience were talked about while having snacks. Being part of this environmental friendly activity makes one proud for you could feel that the participants were really concerned with our environment.
Climate change is upon us so we should have more “woke” programs like this. It is great to instill in the minds of the young ones, but we should also remind the older generation how important it is to plant trees in the city.
We recited a prayer for Mother Nature and proceeded with the tree planting activity. Some of the folks just planted one seedling and that was it. The Valleybikes crew enjoyed planting so much that we planted around 6 seedlings around the area. After planting our first seedling, there were still seedlings that needed to be planted. So we got them and gently placed the soon-to-be-trees in their holes and whispered a short prayer for them to grow and survive the storms that come its way.
The event was a fulfilling activity and it helped our city become less polluted. By planting trees, we are adding oxygen to the air and we are helping lessen the flooding. Groups (whether from the government or not) should regularly do plant a tree activities like these in order to save our ecosystem. Of course cycling goes hand in hand with these activities because it promotes clean air plus lower carbon footprints.
Next time there is a plant a tree activity, please do join. It not only helps the Earth, it also is a good way to meet other people plus it adds oxygen to our air. Win win situation! Winner winner chicken dinner! Till our next Bike/ Plant a tree activity—- Peace!
